Special report about Mexico’s emerging aerospace industry.
Attracted by lower wages, government incentives, trained workers and new agreements with the US, aerospace companies are rushing to Mexico. General Electric, for instance, has set up a research centre where aircraft engines are designed. Bombardier, meanwhile, has plans to eventually assemble complete aircraft in the country. The Canadian company already manufactures tail sections for its Global Express business jet at a plant near Queretaro Airport, which started operations in 2006. The same year, Honeywell Aerospace, which supplies electronics systems, opened a test centre for $ 40M in Mexicali. French group Safran, for its part, recently moved a US-based aircraft maintenance plant to Queretaro in order to cut costs. USA Today (07/04)
